Clinical Studies of Burn Patients

Abstract
312 cases of burn patients had been treated during 14 years (Jan. 1960~ Dec.1973) at surgical department of National Medical Center, ¢¥were reviewed and summarized as following.
1. Most abundant group of age was under 9 year old age- (43.5%)
The youngest age was 20 day old of age, the eldest 68 year old. Male was more abundant than female; the ratio was 1.6 to 1.
2. Seasonal influence was more affected by the burn occurrence which were more frequent in Spring and Summer than others.
3. Most cause of burn were flame (47.5%) and Scalding (43.5%).
The age group of scalding burn was predominated under 9 year old.
4. Most of patients(83.5%) was lesser affected than 50% extent of burn; 155 patients(49.6%), were in 11 to 30% extent of burn.
5. Predominating organisms of an infected burn was ordered as follow; Staphylococcus aureus
59/112 (52.6%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa 43/112 (38.3%).
6. The main organisms in wound culture were compared between the early (1966-1969¢¥s) and late (1970-1973¢¥s) 4 year period.
The Staphylococcus aureus had the decreasing tendency from 39.7% (27/68) in the early period to 29.2% (24/82) in the late period, but Bacterium anitratum was markedly increased from 1.5% (1/68) to 19.8(15/82) in the late 4 year period.
7. The main complications were wound infection (35.8%), pneumonia(6%), renal failure(5%) and GI bleeding (2.8%) in order.
8. Mortality rate was 25.3% in burned patients, and the most frequent cause of death was septicemia (30.4%).
9. The mortality rate was mostly related to the extent of burn. Higher mortality rate was under age group of 10 year old comparing to other group age in lager extent of burn (over 51%).
